We help clients secure gainful employment by providing pre-employment counseling, which includes:
- How to create a resume or fill out application
- How to look for and find appropriate jobs
- What to expect during interviews and how to prepare
- Importance of maintaining employment
- Basic workplace etiquette (punctuality, hygiene, etc.)
- Emphasize workforce readiness and stability
- Transportation and interpretation during the application, interview, and orientation processes.

CULTURAL ORIENTATION
Refugees arrive disoriented and overwhelmed, carrying their traumatic past. Many have limited to no understanding of the English language, and are not able to understand the processes for integration. Overcomers help newly resettled refugees navigate the processes for integration into American culture in a very practical way. Our staff are former refugees themselves, so we understand American culture and the experiences of refugees, as well as speak multiple languages. We provide education about:
- State and local regulations and laws that affect refugees
- General societal norms
- Important cultural differences concerning child care and domestic life
- How to care for one’s living space
- Managing trash collection and recycling
- The diverse cultural and religious customs that exist in America
- What it means to be a good citizen and neighbor
CITIZENSHIP CLASSES
Refugees are eligible to apply for citizenship after 5 years, but the learning begins right away. Overcomers provides citizenship classes 3 days per week to accommodate the varying work schedules of new Americans.
We also refer clients to services and classes run by partner organizations like ESL (English as a Second Language) classes.
